Top Ten Stephen King Books
Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors of all time. He’s written tons of books, mostly in the mystery and horror genre. Below are the top ten Stephen King books.
1. The Shining
This is the story of a family who is secluded in a hotel for the winter season. The hotel has a life of its own, with ghosts and other horrors making their presence known. The father is driven to madness and decides that trying to kill his wife and son is a necessity. The title refers to a gift the son has in which he can see and feel things others can’t.
2. Misery
This is the story of a famous author who gets in an accident. He is rescued and cared for by an obsessed female fan. Her idolization of him grows worse as she keeps him imprisoned in her house.
3. It
IT is a book about a group of children who are terrorized by It, which takes the form of their deepest fear. It takes place over time periods, covering the childhood and adult life of the main characters. It normally appears as a clown named Pennywise, one of the great villains in novel history.
4. Carrie
Carrie is a horror novel that captures high school life better than most other books. It’s about an unpopular teenage girl who has telekinetic powers. She uses her powers to enact revenge on the students who torment her. This was King’s first novel.
5. Salem’s Lot
Salem’s Lot is about an author who discovers people in his home town are becoming vampires. It contains a lot of tension and mystery, which isn’t as common in other vampire stories.
6. Pet Semetary
This novel centers on a family who lives along a road where several pets are killed due to highway traffic. The makeshift pet cemetery is located near an Indian burial ground, which causes those buried there to come back to life, albeit in a sinister form.
7. Cujo
Cujo centers on a mother and son who are terrorized by a rabid St Bernard. The book features the best tension of any King novel, often making the audience feel as trapped as the characters. The rabid dog serves as a symbol for characters who struggle with alcoholism and infidelity.
8. Christine
One of King’s more original novels, Christine is the story of a teenager and his first car. Unfortunately, the car is highly possessive and deadly. The 1958 Plymouth Fury terrorizes the boy and his girlfriend throughout the book.
9. The Green Mile
This isn’t a horror book at all. It deals with a mysterious death row inmate named John Coffey who has the ability to heal animals and people. The mystery in the book centers on Paul, the warden at the prison, and his struggle to understand Coffey’s power.
10. Needful Things
Needful Things has the small town atmosphere common in many Stephen King books. This book centers on the townspeople as a strange store opens run by Leland Gaunt. Gaunt provides people with what they want most. It turns out Gaunt has been around for centuries, and by giving people the things they think they need he is able to get them to do whatever he wants.
