Top Ten Movie and Television Dogs

Dogs have been around in movies and television for many years. Often times, dogs serve as central characters while other times they serve as key supporting stars. Below are the top ten movie and television dogs.

1. Lassie

Lassie is the gold standard for dogs on the screen. Lassie has appeared in over ten films and several television shows. With all those credits, it’s no surprise that Lassie has seen many thrilling adventures and still appears in media over 60 years after the first Lassie film.

2. Baxter

Baxter serves as Ron Burgundy’s soul mate in Anchorman. He survives many obstacles, including being punted off a bridge. Baxter can also speak multiple languages and communicate with bears.

3. Buck Bundy

For many years on Married with Children, Buck served as arguably the most down to earth Bundy. Buck was able to narrate his life, often commenting on how inept each Bundy was at living life. Buck also found himself in several adventures, including having to escape from certain death at the pound. Despite all of this, he remained loyal to the Bundy family.

4. Marley

Marley is the Labrador retriever in Marley & Me. The movie shows Marley’s entire life, describing how much trouble the dog gets in. However Marley is ultimately very happy, and is a vital member of his family.

Astro is the dog of the futuristic Jetson family. He’s fond of starting words with the letter R, such as saying ‘I rove you Rorge.’

6. Hercules

Hercules is the dog from The Sandlot. The children are terrified of the dog, fearing that he eats all of their baseballs they hit over the fence, as well as any kid who goes after them. They stage an elaborate plot to save a ball from Hercules before realizing that the dog is like any other dog, just wanting to play.

7. Pluto

Pluto has appeared in many Disney cartoons over the years. Unlike other Disney characters, Pluto doesn’t have the ability to talk or perform other human-like functions. Instead he has great facial expressions and behaves like a normal dog.

8. Charlie

Charlie is an unusual dog character from the animated film All Dogs Go to Heaven. Charlie is a lowlife dog who dies and goes to Heaven as all dogs do. However he decides he wants to return to Earth, forfeiting his place in Heaven. After that, Charlie has to fight to avoid a fate in Hell.

9. Scooby Doo

Scooby Doo is a member of the mystery solving team that includes Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, and Velma. Scooby is often very aloof and easily frightened. He is driven by Scooby Snacks, and will do anything to get them. Most of the time Scooby manages to stumble his way in to solving the mysteries for the team.

10. Hooch

Hooch is a mastiff who partners with Tom Hanks in an effort to solve a murder case. Hooch slobbers everywhere and causes a lot of property damage. But he serves as a great partner for Hanks’s character, and proves his worth when it matters most.
