Top Ten Sci Fi Movies
An acute attention to detail is required to make us believe the unbelievable. So it is not a surprise that some of the most visually-gifted filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, and James Cameron, have directed many of the most influential sci-fi movies of all time, including these ten that captured millions of imaginations, and inspired future sci-fi in the progress. Here are the top ten sci fi movies.
10.) AVATAR – James Cameron’s fictional exploration of planet Pandora became the most successful movie in the entire world during its theatrical run in 2009-2010. The realistically-rendered appearance of the blue Na’vi, and their breathtaking world, revolutionized visual effects, and 3-D photography.
9.) CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND - This story of one man’s alien encounter, was the first sci-fi spectacle director Steven Spielberg ever directed for the big screen. Spielberg brought outer space to Earth, answering questions fueled by paranoia, and our fascination with the unknown.
8.) BLADE RUNNER - Ridley Scott’s futuristic tale of android slavery had brilliant visual effects. This gothic depiction of 2019 Los Angeles pretty much predicts our current bombardment of video billboard advertisements, back in 1982.
7.) ALIEN - Once again, director Ridley Scott creates sci-fi excitement, this time aboard a space ship with a serious angry-alien problem. Before Sigourney Weaver became a virtual alien in “Avatar”, she fought one in this science fiction-horror film merger.
6.) BACK TO THE FUTURE - Why can’t science fiction be funny? This time-traveling blockbuster starring Michael J Fox proved that it was time for time machines to become cool sports cars, hysterical dialogue, and getting to see how our parents really acted as teenagers.
5.) A CLOCKWORK ORANGE - Stanley Kubric’s controversial story depicted a rebellious teen addicted to sex, violence, and Beethoven symphonies. It poses the question, should we control a human being’s right to choose their own behavior?
4.) TERMINATOR 2 - Watching Arnold Schwarzenegger’s shape-shifting enemy liquify his arms into weapons, you are witnessing sci-fi magic. James Cameron’s sequel to his original Terminator film produced ground-breaking visual effects, much like he did throughout his career.
3.) E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL - Steve Spielberg created an international pop culture explosion with this emotional bond between a human boy and a lost alien. Not only are we reminded of how open-minded and curious we were as children, but that some aliens may just want to get home and be with their family, just like us.
2.) STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE - To call this 1977 science fiction tale of Jedi warriors influential is an understatement. “Star Wars” has become as timeless as any Walt Disney story.
1.) 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY - What makes Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi classic, so classic, is that it is more of an experience than it is a story. Through the manipulation of sight and sound, we literally follow a mysterious black artifact through time, from the dawn of man, to so far in the future that computers can think for themselves, all done way before CGI graphics.
